The 20,000 forest, the largest in Connecticut, was originally purchased as an emergency relief effort to buy-out marginal farmland during the depression,  However, the Pachaug Forest has some interesting habitats: large pine barrens, a unique white cedar swamp and a rare rhododendron sanctuary.  The 26-acre rhododendron sanctuary is a state designated Natural Area Preserve, blooming late in June to early July.  Pachaug hosts dog sled races in the winter.  Water, out houses, pinic tables, fireplaces, boat launches and parking.

Recreational Activities: Camping, horse camping, picnicking, fishing, hiking, boating, horseback riding, snowmobiling, cross country skiing, scuba diving, dog sled racing.
