Land was acquired as the Connecticut's second state forest to grow white pines.  This was a reaction to the rapid deforestation of  the state.  Rte. 171 entrance is at Bigelow Hollow State Park; Rte. 190 entrance is the Laurel Sanctuary.  Mountain Laurel is the Connecticut State Flower.
