The forest is popular with equestrians;  the Lost Silver Mine Horse Camp welcomes horses and their owners.  Pheasant are stocked in the forest and the Natchaug river, stocked with trout, is one of the best fishing spots in the state.  The Nipmuck and Natchaug blue-blazed trails transect the forest. Year-round recreation is offered.  Its historic sites include an abandoned silver mine and the ruins of the birthplace of Gen. Nathaniel Lyon.  Outhouses, water, parking.

Recreational Activities: Picnicking, hunting, horseback riding, snowmobiling, hiking, fishing, historic site, horse camping, backpack camping, cross country skiing, mountain biking and canoeing and kayaking.
