Brief
Description:
The Ballard Institute and Museum of Puppetry
(BIMP) preserve, documents and displays puppets from a
number of periods and countries. The Collection includes
thousands of puppets donated by puppeteers and organizations
who wish to see the art of puppetry studied and expanded,
as well as puppets created by Frank Ballard and his students
in the famous Puppet Arts Program at the University of
connecticut. Among the many treasures in BIMP's holdings
of marionettes, shadow, rod and hand puppets are the Rufus
and Margo Rose Collection, the McPharlin Collection, traditional
Punch and Judy characters, Neapolitan marionettes and many
others created by world-renowned artists. Stage props,
photographs and letters of historical significance are
also an important part of the museum and institute archives.
