Disk golf,
also known as Frisbee™ golf or Frolf, is a
popular sport in which the players hurl a flying disc into a
basket. It is similar to golf and uses many of the same rules
and terminology. The sport was started in California in the late
1960s on an informal course designed to get children to hurl
discs through a prescribed course of objects. It was standardized
by a number of innovators and culminated in the formation of
several disc golf associations. The sport’s enthusiasts
typically play on an 18-hole (basket) course with about 250 yards
between each hole. While most courses are in open spaces, more
challenging venues are situated in lightly wooded and hilly areas.
The sport has spread to Great Britain and other countries. There
is even a Disc Golf Hall of Fame. Whether one’s favorite
throw is a hyzer, tomahawk or thumber, the disc golfer can find
courses at a number of locations in The Last Green Valley, including
West Thompson Lake and Buffumville Lake.
